Burgers with Sweet Potato Fries

(18 ratings)
Comment on this recipe.

Served with oven-roasted spiced sweet potato fries and garlic mayonnaise, these aren’t your run-of-the-mill burgers. And since making them is such a breeze, they’re certain to become a favorite with your family.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut each sweet potato lengthwise into 8 wedges, then cut crosswise in half. Spray the potatoes lightly with nonstick cooking spray. In a small mixing bowl, combine 1 teaspoon of the salt, the cumin and 1/8 teaspoon of the cayenne and sprinkle over the potatoes. Arrange the potatoes, cut side down, on the baking sheet. Roast until browned and tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, lightly mix together the beef, turkey, onion, ground pepper and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Shape the mixture into 4- 1-inch-thick patties.
  4. Spray a grill pan or heavy skillet with nonstick cooking spray and warm over medium-high heat until almost smoking. Cook the patties until browned, about 5 minutes. Turn and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes more.
  5. Meanwhile, mash the garlic with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt with a mortar and pestle or with a chef’s knife until it becomes a paste. Stir into the mayonnaise along with the remaining 1/8 teaspoon cayenne and the lemon juice.
  6. To serve, put each burger on a plate and place 2 tablespoons of the mayo next to each burger. Place the sweet potatoes on the plates, dividing them evenly.

  • Apparently I am the only person who didn't especially love this recipe. The "burger" is not a burger at all—it's a meatball, and ours turned out rather dry and lacking flavour. And the "fries" are not fries either—they're roasted sweet potatoes, and ours ended up kind of mushy. I guess if you add lots of other K0 veg, make it into a hash, or sauté up a mess of mushrooms, this would improve it, but without the delicious garlic mayo, the dish seemed underwhelming.

  • Of course like everyone else, my wife and I LOVE this recipe. The burgers are delicious and we serve it on a BIG bed of spinach so its almost like a salad. The garlic mayo is amazing to dip the fries in and it also acts as a dressing for the bed of spinach with the burger...SO good!!

  • LOVE THIS! I buy more than one pound of ground beef and make extra of the beef, turkey, onion mixture and freeze it for later. Super easy!

  • This was good. Even my picky eater husband liked it and would eat again. It seemed like way too much mayo though. I've done sweet potato fries before, but not with the seasoning. It was really good.

  • My husband is a self-professed burger connoisseur and was afraid he would miss his burgers, he LOVED these! Ate them for breakfast the next day! I made a lettuce "bun" for these and that made it feel like eating a "real" burger: core and halve a head of iceberg, remove the 3-4 outer leaves of lettuce and voila! bun

  • if you don't like mayonnaise, feel free to substitute 4-1 ounce slices of reduced fat cheese.

  • Fries are yummy! I didn't care for the mayo, just not a mayo kind of gal, so I need to find a substitution for it.

  • I love hamburgers and I'm so happy I can still have them. The mayo is a delicious condiment for both the burger and the sweet potatoes. I can see myself eating this weekly (for dinner AND lunch the next day...hehe).

  • My wife Carol made this tonight. It was absolutely delicious. In the past I have not been a big sweet potato fan, but they tasted great. Hamburger, onions, garlilc... what's not to like about that? I highly recommend this recipe.

  • I like to make a hash version of this. I brown all the beef broken up in the pan and cube the potatoes before baking, then mash 1/2 of them and add it all to the beef. Add a little water, stir and let brown on the bottom of skillet. Serve with 1/4 cup of salsa and the mayo.
