Return to previous pageQ: I don’t eat artificial sweeteners- what’s Stevia?
A: Stevia is a natural alternative to artificial sweeteners. It is a plant whose leaves and flower buds contain sugar-like compounds, yet cannot be metabolized by the digestive system. In other words stevia has no effect on raising or lowering your blood sugar. Stevia is not affected by heat. It performs best in liquids and baked goods that do not require the chemical reactivity that granulated sugar provides. You can purchase it as a liquid extract or a powder at most natural grocery stores.
Stevia is 200 times sweeter than sugar so start with a pinch and increase the amount to taste.
